Elcom UK | Personal Data Privacy Issues Hindering E-Business In UK. Research just published suggests that worries about personal data privacy are holding back the growth of e-commerce generally.

The report, from BindView, the IT security software firm, is not independent, but makes the interesting point that there is a growing nervousness among people in the UK about the security of their personal information.

AP via New Jersey Online - Software tools help protect online privacy as threats mount.

Myman doesn't know much about Web bugs and cookies -- but says he knows enough to be thinking about shielding himself from them.

For that, he can turn to a growing array of privacy-enhancing products designed to make Web-surfing anonymous.

One of the most popular is Freedom from Zero-Knowledge Systems Inc. It protects by routing data through the Montreal-based company's network servers, which strip off identifying information about users before sending the data to a Web site.

By masking the numerical Internet address that identifies a user's computer, Web sites are prevented from tracking the user, who effectively surfs under an alias.

Philadelphia Inquirer - Suits to try to block Internet filter requirement . A U.S. law aims to shield children from pornography, but critics say it is unconstitutional. The Free Library agrees.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the American Library Association are poised to file companion suits in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia on Tuesday challenging a new law that requires schools and libraries to use Internet filters to receive federal technology funds.

GlennLogs - Everything in Moderation - Gilmore and Censorship. According to a story in the UK Register, an electronic freedom advocate, John Gilmore, has had his email servers blocked for running an open mail relay. Gilmore has called it censorship, according to the article. In fact, he's been irresponsible, and he's trying to mobilize an effort to criticize an ISP that has done the right thing. The irony is that he's a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and he can't appear to differentiate between censorship (denial of all fora by a governmental body) and commerce (contractual obligations and abilities agreed to by both parties until civil law).
