Verizon Wireless sues telemarketers

Welcome to www.dailyrecord.com - Updates - Verizon Wireless sues telemarketers: "Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group Plc, sued unknown telemarketers in New Jersey state court for making more than one million illegal calls to its customers in March.

The unidentified telemarketers, advertising low interest rate mortgages, illegally used an ''autodialer,' making the calls from the number 712-429-0367 or numbers with a similar exchange, according to the statement today.

''These unlawful telemarketing calls invade the privacy of Verizon Wireless's customers,' Steven Zipperstein, the company's general counsel, said in the statement.

Verizon said telemarketers violated the U.S. Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and state fraud and privacy laws, according to a complaint filed in Superior Court in Somerville.

Enacted in 1991, the federal law restricts the use of autodialers, which make calls using a random or sequential number generator.
