Who's Behind The Latest Political Campaign Phone Spam?
Who's Behind The Latest Political Campaign Phone Spam? - Via Threat Level:
To file in the Department of Unsolved Mysteries: Some auto-dialing service is calling apparently random people up in the middle of the night and spamming them with recorded 2008 presidential campaign speeches.
Complaints are surfacing on consumer complaint and telemarketing-tracking sites like Who Called Us and 800Notes. The offending number is: (616) 980 2604 .
Details are sketchy, but various recipients of the calls say that they've heard recordings of political rallies, the voices of Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, Democratic candidate Chris Dodd, New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich.
When Wired News called the number, a recorded woman's voice on the other end said that the entry of a phone number would place the caller on an opt-out list.
It sounds like some bizarre telephone scheme to see if anyone is at home.
Do Threat Level readers have any ideas on what this strange phone-spamming campaign is up to? Send me your thoughts!
